Mercury: The Astrology of Mind, Voice, and the Messenger
Mercury is the fastest of the classical planets, never straying more than 28 degrees from the Sun. In the sky it is a shy, brilliant thing, glimpsed only at dusk or dawn, chasing the light it can never quite outrun. That astronomy is already a metaphor: Mercury is the part of us that stays close to consciousness, forever translating raw experience into language, logic, and exchange.
The Messenger's Work
Named for the winged god who moved between worlds — Olympus and the underworld, the divine and the mortal — Mercury governs everything that carries meaning from one place to another. Speech, writing, learning, commerce, gossip, the wiring of the nervous system: all of it belongs to this planet. In your chart, Mercury describes how you think, not what you think about. Is your mind a river or a filing cabinet? Do you reason in images, arguments, or stories? Mercury holds the answer.
Because it hugs the Sun so tightly, Mercury will always sit in the same sign as your Sun or one adjacent to it. This is worth savoring. The gift of knowing your Mercury is self-forgiveness. If your mind wanders, or fixes, or circles a worry like a moth, that is a texture, not a flaw. Mercury asks only that meaning keep moving — that you keep listening as well as speaking, reading as well as posting, translating the inner world outward and the outer world in.
And when Mercury turns retrograde three times a year, treat it less as catastrophe than as the messenger pausing to reread his own notes. Even the quickest mind needs to double back. Slowness, sometimes, is how understanding finally lands.
